Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (SFTS) is primarily spread through tick bites and can cause a range of symptoms including fever, coughing, and vomiting in both humans and animals. In severe cases, the illness can be fatal.
According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, a pet dog in the city developed symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea last month. Upon examination, the owner discovered a tick attached to the animal’s body. Subsequent testing confirmed that the dog was infected with SFTS. Unfortunately, the dog died on September 27.
Authorities noted that the animal had pre-existing health conditions, and it remains unclear whether SFTS was the direct cause of death. Until now, there have been only two confirmed cases of human SFTS infection in Tokyo. This latest case marks the first detection of the virus in an animal within the city.
In response, the metropolitan government is urging residents to take precautions when spending time outdoors. Recommended measures include using tick repellents and carefully checking both themselves and their pets to avoid tick bites.
Taking these preventive steps is essential to reduce the risk of SFTS infection and protect public health.
