A day care worker in Wisconsin has been accused of child abuse after allegedly injuring a 3-month-old infant in her care. Ashley Marie Karschnick, 32, reportedly became frustrated when the baby began crying every time she touched her. According to authorities, Karschnick slammed the infant into the side of a crib, resulting in a broken arm.
The incident occurred on October 13 at Lily Pad Day Care in Fond du Lac, located about 70 miles northwest of Milwaukee. Police were called to a children’s hospital after the infant arrived with a fractured arm.
Court records reveal that Karschnick was working in the baby room on the day of the incident. Investigators reviewing surveillance footage noted that Karschnick appeared increasingly frustrated as the day went on. Around 12:30 p.m., the video allegedly showed her pick up the baby and slam her down into the crib with such force that the side of the crib rocked side to side, accompanied by a loud thump on the mattress.
Approximately 10 minutes later, Karschnick returned to the crib and attempted to swaddle the infant to calm her, but the baby continued crying so intensely she was gasping for air and emitting what was described as a “blood-curdling scream.”
According to the affidavit, the baby’s arm was limp and not functioning properly at that point.
After being Mirandized, Karschnick denied slamming the baby. She claimed the crib moved because she accidentally bumped into it. When detectives asked why the baby was crying so loudly, Karschnick allegedly responded, “I feel like it was the same cry she was giving me. I feel like every time I touched her she was crying.”
Karschnick was arrested and taken to jail, where she posted a $2,500 bond. She is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
This case highlights the critical importance of proper care and patience when working with infants, and authorities continue to investigate the incident.
