Four years ago, Amazon Games launched the MMORPG *New World*. Since its release, the game has experienced a rollercoaster of events, including a significant refresh when it debuted on consoles as *New World: Aeternum*. Now, following the conclusion of Season 10, and amid reports of mass layoffs at Amazon, content updates for *New World* will come to an end.
In a recent blog post on the game’s official website, the *New World: Aeternum* development team announced the cessation of content updates. The post detailed what this means for the future of the game and reassured players that *New World* is not shutting down — at least not for now. The servers will remain active and are planned to stay online through 2026.
Players can continue to enjoy the game despite no new content being added. Additionally, the team promised to provide a six-month notice should they ever be forced to shut the servers down. In the meantime, purchasing in-game currency, downloading, and installing the game will remain available. However, it’s important to note that there will be no refunds for in-game items such as the Masks of Fortune.
Our review of *New World* began in 2021 with its original launch and was revisited in late 2024 for the *New World: Aeternum* console version. Editor Donovan Erskine noted that while the game showed promise and was developed by an experienced team, it didn’t quite reach the absolute highs that some players may have hoped for.
The end of content updates comes during a period of significant change at Amazon. The company recently announced major layoffs affecting approximately 14,000 employees. Although the *New World* team did not directly address this in their announcement, Amazon Games is confirmed to have been impacted by these workforce reductions.
With ongoing server support planned through 2026, players still have time to explore the world of *New World* and all it has to offer, even as new content updates come to a close.
