The 2025 NFL trade deadline is less than a week away, and many teams are starting to make moves to prepare for the latter half of the season. The Los Angeles Rams have made their first big trade by acquiring cornerback Roger McCreary from the Tennessee Titans to bolster their cornerback position.
Strengthening the cornerback spot was one of the biggest priorities for the Rams during the offseason. Although it couldn’t be finalized before the start of the season, the move is now complete with the addition of the young defender. With this key improvement secured, the Rams are now focusing on other areas of the roster that need enhancement.
### Trading For a Pro Bowl Tight End
Currently, the Rams have four tight ends on their roster, but only one has proven to be a reliable target for quarterback Matthew Stafford. ESPN’s Seth Walder suggests that the Rams should consider trading for Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku to give their offense a significant boost.
“Njoku could take the offense over the top. The Rams drafted rookie Terrance Ferguson in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft and surely hope he’s their tight end of the future. But he has only two receptions this season with Tyler Higbee as their No. 1 option,” Walder wrote.
He added, “Njoku would be a major upgrade even as a temporary fix, considering he is on the last year of his deal. That’s why the move fits, while not shutting the door on the team developing Ferguson.”
### The Current Tight End Situation in Los Angeles
Tyler Higbee is the longest-tenured tight end on the Rams and has the most experience in head coach Sean McVay’s offense. His chemistry with Stafford explains why he receives the majority of snaps. However, Higbee missed most of the 2024 season with ACL and MCL tears, leaving tight end Colby Parkinson to step up.
Although Parkinson got the bulk of the playing time in Higbee’s absence, he wasn’t able to fully capitalize on the opportunity. Parkinson tallied 294 receiving yards and one touchdown during the season.
Another option in the tight end room is third-year player Davis Allen, who has yet to establish a strong connection with Stafford. Over his three-year career, Allen has accumulated 193 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
Bringing in Njoku would provide the Rams with a proven offensive weapon, enhancing their chances of contending for a Super Bowl.
### What Will the Rams Give Up For David Njoku?
David Njoku has built an impressive resume over his nine-year career, registering more than 4,000 receiving yards and 32 touchdowns. As a player of his caliber, acquiring him would likely require a substantial trade package before the Browns consider moving him.
Given that the Rams already have four tight ends on their roster, it makes sense they might trade at least one in exchange for Njoku.
“There aren’t many players to choose from on this team, as the Rams are more likely to be adding at the deadline. Los Angeles could part with one of the four they have on its roster,” ESPN’s Sarah Barshop noted.
Parkinson seems the most logical candidate to be traded, as he is currently in the second season of the three-year deal he signed in 2024. Although injuries have hampered his production this season—forcing him out of two games—he remains a younger option who could see increased receiving opportunities as a primary or secondary tight end, something that might be possible if he joins Cleveland.
