Police say an explosion inside a building on the Harvard Medical School campus in Boston early Saturday morning appears to have been an intentional act.
The Harvard University Police Department reported that just before 3 a.m., an officer was dispatched to the Goldenson Building on Longwood Avenue in Boston following a fire alarm activation. Upon arrival, the officer observed two individuals running from the building. Attempts to stop or identify them were unsuccessful.
When the officer later investigated the floor where the alarm had been triggered, an explosion was discovered on the fourth floor. The Boston Fire Department Arson Unit was called to the scene and, after an initial assessment, determined that the explosion appeared to be intentional.
Officers from the Boston Police Department conducted a sweep of the building to search for any additional devices, but none were found.
An FBI spokesperson confirmed that their team is on site assisting partners at the Harvard University Police Department but declined further comment at this time, referring inquiries back to Harvard University Police.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported as a result of the explosion.
The Harvard University Police Department is leading the investigation, collaborating with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the Harvard University Police Department’s detective bureau at (617) 495-1796.
For context, the Goldenson Building, constructed in 1906, is one of several Harvard buildings located on the Boston campus surrounding the HMS Quad Lawn, according to Harvard University Planning and Design.
