Ja Morant Suspended After Blasting Grizzlies’ Coaching Staff

The Memphis Grizzlies have suspended their two-time All-Star guard Ja Morant for one game on Saturday due to conduct detrimental to the team. This decision follows a series of postgame comments in which Morant publicly challenged head coach Tuomas Iisalo’s leadership. The suspension comes amid the worst six-game stretch of Morant’s career and growing frustration from all parties involved.

A Star in Decline

Through six games this season, Morant is averaging 20.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 6.7 assists while shooting just 15.6% from three-point range. He is also playing a career-low 28.5 minutes per game. Once the face of Memphis’ fast-paced and confident identity, the 26-year-old guard now appears disconnected from the team’s new direction under coach Iisalo.

Morant’s frustration came to a head after Friday night’s 117-112 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. He struggled offensively, going 3-for-14 from the field and finishing with eight points, seven assists, and one rebound. When asked about his poor performance, Morant repeatedly told reporters to “go ask the coaching staff.” Pressed further on what the team could have done differently, he delivered a revealing quote: “According to (the coaching staff), probably don’t play me, honestly. That’s basically what the message was after, so it’s cool.”

These remarks, along with his visible tension on the bench, prompted the Grizzlies to act swiftly. Morant’s one-game suspension will cost him $272,042, which is 1/145 of his $39 million salary.

New Leadership, Old Problems

Coach Tuomas Iisalo replaced Taylor Jenkins following last season’s surprising firing. Iisalo was brought in to reset a fractured team culture. Ironically, his biggest challenge now may be repairing his relationship with the franchise cornerstone, Ja Morant.

Jenkins’ dismissal was partly due to reports that he had “lost the locker room,” and Morant’s recent comments suggest similar issues may be emerging again. The timing is particularly unfortunate given that Memphis traded Desmond Bane this past summer, signaling a reset aimed at returning offensive control to Morant.

However, instead of relying solely on their star, the Grizzlies have emphasized youth and balance. Ten players have appeared in at least five of the six games played so far, including rookie Cedric Coward, who is averaging 15.5 points, five rebounds, and shooting 52.4% from three-point range. Second-year guard Jaylen Wells is also seeing significant shot attempts, nearly matching All-Star forward Jaren Jackson Jr.

Offense Still Thriving Without Morant’s Spark

Despite Morant’s reduced efficiency, Memphis has remained surprisingly competitive on both ends of the floor. The Grizzlies currently rank 12th in offensive rating and 10th in defensive rating. They are averaging 119.0 points per game while maintaining a pace of 105.71 possessions, positioning them among the league’s faster teams.

The team’s offensive balance has helped offset Morant’s struggles, with contributions spread across the roster. Iisalo’s system emphasizes tempo, spacing, and ball movement — key areas where Memphis has quietly excelled. While Morant’s scoring dip has attracted headlines, the overall offense has been more efficient than last year’s injury-plagued unit. This suggests that the Grizzlies’ new approach may be working despite, not because of, their star guard.

Early Warning Signs

At 3-3, the Grizzlies haven’t fallen apart, but their wins have come against lower-tier opponents such as Phoenix, Indiana, and New Orleans. Against playoff-caliber teams, Memphis has looked overmatched and uninspired.

Whether Morant’s suspension serves as a wake-up call or signals another crack in the foundation remains to be seen. What is clear is that Memphis’ attempt to move forward without friction is already showing signs of unraveling.

For a franchise that once thrived on grit and chemistry, the biggest question now isn’t about talent — it’s whether their star player and head coach can coexist long enough to steer the season back on track.
