India Women’s Cricket Team Make History by Winning 2025 World Cup
India’s women’s cricket team etched their name in history by clinching the 2025 World Cup title with a commanding 52-run victory over South Africa at the D. Y Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Sunday, November 2.
In pursuit of a challenging target of 299, South Africa’s Laura Wolvaardt played a fighting knock of 101 runs. However, Deepti Sharma’s exceptional bowling figures of 9-0-39-5 proved decisive as South Africa were bowled out for 246. Both teams entered the final without a previous World Cup title, but it was the hosts who dominated on the big stage.
BCCI Announces ₹51 Crore Reward
In addition to the ICC prize money of ₹39.78 crore, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a massive reward of ₹51 crore for the players, coaches, and support staff of the victorious team.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia lavished praise on captain Harmanpreet Kaur and her teammates, comparing their historic achievement to the era ushered in by Kapil Dev and his 1983 World Cup-winning team. Speaking to ANI, Saikia said,
“In 1983, Kapil Dev brought about a new era and encouragement in cricket by making India win the World Cup. The same excitement and encouragement have been introduced by the women today. Harmanpreet Kaur and her team have not just won the trophy; they have won the hearts of all Indians.”
He further highlighted the strides made under Jay Shah’s leadership:
“Since Jay Shah took charge of the BCCI, many transformations in women’s cricket have been implemented. Pay parity has been addressed. Last month, ICC Chairman Jay Shah increased women’s prize money by 300 percent—from $2.88 million to $14 million. These steps have greatly promoted women’s cricket. The BCCI has also announced a reward prize of ₹51 crores for the entire team—players, coaches, and support staff.”
Player of the Match and Tournament Honors
Shafali Verma was named Player of the Match for her all-round performance—an aggressive 87 runs off 78 balls coupled with impressive bowling figures of 7-0-36-2. Deepti Sharma earned the Player of the Tournament award after scoring 215 runs and taking 22 wickets throughout the tournament.
Plans for Victory Celebrations
Regarding the possibility of a victory parade, Devajit Saikia told IANS, “Nothing like a victory parade is planned as of now. I’m leaving for Dubai to attend the ICC meeting. Several officials are heading there as well, so once we return, we will plan accordingly.”
Emotional Moments for Legends
The historic win also brought tears to the eyes of Indian cricket legends Jhulan Goswami and Mithali Raj. Both icons were visibly emotional on camera and were included in the title celebrations with the team.
This monumental triumph marks a new era for Indian women’s cricket, inspiring millions across the nation and showcasing the rise of a formidable squad on the global stage.
