The economist behind a French initiative that mobilised €13 billion in private savings to fund technological innovation believes the same approach is possible at the European level—provided investors are given the confidence to take risks.
“Long-term investors must see risk as diversification, not danger,” Philippe Tibi told the European Angel Investment Summit in Brussels on October 28.
More start-ups are launched annually in Europe than in the US, but these companies often have to look overseas for the large investments they need to scale up.
In 2023, funding rounds above €100 million generated €21 billion in Europe compared to €81 billion in the US, according to a recent study prepared for the European Commission.
