BYD hypercar dethrones Bugatti with new speed record

China’s BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme is redefining what an electric car can do. Germany’s Automotive Testing Papenburg has verified a blistering top speed of 308.4 mph (496.32 km/h), the highest ever recorded for a production car.

In doing so, the Yangwang U9 Xtreme surpassed the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ record of 304.77 mph (490.48 km/h) set in 2019. BYD has announced that production will be capped at just 30 units for buyers around the world.
