**Bill Proposing Death Penalty for “Terrorists” Passes First Reading in Israel’s Parliament**

A bill proposing the death penalty for “terrorists” passed its first reading in Israel’s parliament on Monday. This measure could apply to Palestinians convicted of deadly attacks against Israelis.
The amendment to the penal code, demanded by far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and approved by the National Security Committee, was passed by a vote of 39 to 16. The bill must still pass a second and third reading before it can become law.
The vote took place amid a tense truce with Hamas in the ongoing Gaza conflict that has raged since October 7, 2023.
While the death penalty exists for a small number of crimes in Israel, the country has effectively been abolitionist for decades. The Nazi Holocaust perpetrator Adolf Eichmann was the last person to be executed in Israel, in 1962.
