**S S Rajamouli Announces ‘Varanasi’ as the First Indian Film Filmed for IMAX at Grand Globetrotter Event in Hyderabad**
Hyderabad witnessed a star-studded gathering at the grand Globetrotter event, attended by celebrated personalities such as S S Rajamouli, M M Keeravani, Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra, Prithviraj Sukumaran, and others. The highlight of the evening was filmmaker S S Rajamouli’s exciting announcement about his upcoming film *Varanasi*.
Rajamouli revealed that *Varanasi* will be the first film in Indian cinema to be **filmed specifically for IMAX**. This groundbreaking development is set to introduce new technology to Telugu cinema, promising a premium, large-scale viewing experience unlike anything seen before.
Addressing the audience, Rajamouli explained the difference between films that are simply “blown up” for IMAX screens versus those that are truly filmed in the IMAX format. He emphasized,
> “Certain films released in IMAX screens are enlarged versions, but that is not true IMAX.”
He further elaborated that his previous films like *Baahubali* and *RRR* (2022) were released in the 1:1.9 format, whereas *Varanasi* will utilize the full IMAX screen format of 100 feet by 130 feet.
A visual demonstration covering the entire massive screen underscored this difference, impressing the audience. Rajamouli proudly stated,
> “Our film (*Varanasi*) will be screened full screen. It is filmed for IMAX! I’m so proud to say that we are introducing new technology to Telugu cinema—a premium large-scale format. It is filmed for IMAX.”
The crowd erupted in excitement at this revelation.
Rajamouli then requested his team to roll the trailer in full-screen IMAX format. However, a technical glitch delayed the screening. Exhibiting his good humor, Rajamouli mentioned that powering the 100 feet by 130 feet screen required 45 generators. After a brief wait, the trailer was finally played in all its glory, eliciting a roaring response from the audience.
Earlier in the day, actor Prithviraj Sukumaran shared his experience joining the *Varanasi* project. He recalled,
> “The famous S S Rajamouli narration, which my friend Prabhas told me so much about, started. Five minutes into the narration, I was blown away. For the rest of the three hours, I listened not as an actor hearing a pitch but more like a little boy who’s found the next edition of his favorite comic book! The scale, the vision, the ambition—it is India’s greatest contemporary filmmaking, pushing his own limits to never-before-seen territory.”
The event buzzed with excitement as stars and fans alike celebrated this new milestone for Indian cinema.
