Jehchys Brown records key sack for safety and SEMO rallies to defeat Western Illinois 22-17

MACOMB, Ill. (AP) — Southeast Missouri State’s Jehchys Brown made a game-changing play in the fourth quarter, sacking Western Illinois quarterback Carson Carswell for the go-ahead safety. The Redhawks went on to secure a 22-17 victory over the Leathernecks on Saturday.

Ryan Kingston’s 45-yard punt pinned Western Illinois deep at their own 5-yard line. On a critical third-and-5 from the 10-yard line, Brown broke through the offensive line and sacked Carswell, resulting in a safety worth two points and putting Southeast Missouri State ahead 19-17 with 14:10 remaining in the game.

Later, Justin Keller extended the lead by kicking a 39-yard field goal with just 59 seconds left on the clock.

The Redhawks (4-7, 3-4 OVC-Big South) overcame a 17-3 deficit in the second quarter. Quarterback Johnny Weber connected with Cole Ruble on a 6-yard touchdown pass to narrow the gap to 17-10 at halftime. Early in the third quarter, running back Brandon Epton Jr. electrified the crowd with an 80-yard touchdown run, tying the game at 17.

Epton finished the game with 110 rushing yards, while Weber threw for 193 yards. On the other side, Western Illinois (3-8, 2-5) was led by Carswell, who passed for 287 yards and two touchdowns. Markell Holman rushed for 118 yards, and Demari Davis contributed 104 yards receiving.

The Redhawks’ strong defensive stand and timely scoring plays ultimately fueled their comeback and secured the victory over the Leathernecks.
