Rory McIlroy Gets Honest About the Race to Dubai Standings at the 2025 DP World Tour Championship
Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy is currently competing in the 2025 DP World Tour Championship, part of the European Tour, and is in strong contention to win the title. As he looks forward to defending his DP World Tour Championship crown, McIlroy is also focused on finishing the season at the top of the Race to Dubai standings.
In the post-round press conference following Saturday’s round, McIlroy spoke candidly about the Race to Dubai standings and his performance throughout the week. He acknowledged the challenges posed by fellow contenders such as Marco Penge, Tyrrell Hatton, and Matt Fitzpatrick.
“I knew coming out here for these two weeks—Dubai last week and this week—I needed to play well. Marco wasn’t that far behind. Obviously, Tyrrell wasn’t that far behind. I knew I needed to come out here and play well. I played well when I needed to last week, especially over the weekend. I put myself in position to try to get another win here,” McIlroy said.
He added, “So yeah, really pleased. I certainly could have coasted into these couple of weeks and just enjoyed myself, but the Race to Dubai is important to me, and it’s important to me to try to get a little bit closer to Monty. As I said, I’ve put myself in a great position to go and do that tomorrow.”
Currently leading the Race to Dubai standings, McIlroy has a promising chance to finish the season as the overall winner, which would net him a $2 million bonus. The top 10 players in the Race to Dubai standings after the DP World Tour Championship share a $6 million prize pool in bonuses.
At this week’s event, McIlroy is enjoying a terrific outing. After three rounds, he is tied for the lead at 13-under par alongside Rasmus Neergaard Petersen.
McIlroy opened his campaign on Thursday with a solid 66, followed by rounds of 69 and 68, positioning himself strongly heading into the final day.
Reflecting on his third round, McIlroy said, “I hit two great shots into the first, two great shots into the second. I missed a 2 1/2 to 3-footer on the second hole, and I three-putted that. I feel after that, I let it affect me a little bit, especially on the greens for the next few holes.”
He continued, “But I stayed really patient, gave myself plenty of opportunities. I didn’t hole that much, but I knew there were a few chances coming in. It was nice to take advantage of those on 14, 15, and 18. Overall, it was a bit of a battling day. The conditions were tricky enough, but I’m happy to shoot the score that I did.”
McIlroy has won the DP World Tour Championship three times in his career, including last year’s event, and he aims to defend his title successfully. Additionally, he is on course to achieve a remarkable feat: securing his fourth consecutive Race to Dubai title.
With the final round ahead, all eyes are on McIlroy as he seeks to cap off an impressive season and add more milestones to his illustrious career.
