The Hoosiers’ shot-caller became the first Indiana player to win the award. Mendoza was instrumental in Indiana University’s historic regular season, steering the Hoosiers to a perfect 13-0 record, the program’s first outright Big Ten championship since 1945, and earning the No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff.
He led the country in passing touchdowns with 33 and is only the third Big Ten quarterback since 2000 to have three straight games with at least four passing touchdowns and zero interceptions.
It may come as a surprise to some, but even as an avid Ohio State fan, I agree with this award for Mendoza. He gave an impassioned speech and truly deserved the recognition.
One commenter noted, “He was an exemplary candidate and eventual recipient of his prestigious award.”
