As the festive season approaches in India, consumer interest in diamonds is witnessing a notable rise. Tehmasp Printer, Managing Director and CEO of the International Gemmological Institute (IGI), shared his insights on this growing trend and the increasing popularity of lab-grown diamonds among younger shoppers.
### Market Shift: The US Leads, India is Close Behind
Lab-grown diamonds have become a popular choice in the US market, with nearly half of bridal diamond purchases involving these stones. They offer an “affordable luxury” without compromising quality or the physical properties of natural diamonds. While the US remains the largest market for lab-grown diamonds, India’s stake is rapidly growing. IGI currently polishes, cuts, and certifies around 80% of all lab-grown diamonds in India, highlighting the country’s expanding role in this segment.
### Expanding Accessibility Beyond Metros
Addressing concerns about accessibility, Printer noted that lab-grown diamond jewelry is now reaching second- and third-tier cities across India. This expansion is making diamond ownership more attainable to a broader demographic. Despite some lingering negative perceptions about lab-grown stones, IGI’s independent and ISO-accredited certification ensures transparency and authenticity, helping consumers confidently choose between natural and lab-grown diamonds.
### Embracing Technology for Transparency and Efficiency
IGI is pioneering the use of digital diamond certification powered by blockchain technology, which provides a secure provenance record throughout the diamond supply chain. Additionally, Printer shared that IGI is integrating artificial intelligence into its processes to enhance operational efficiency, reduce turnaround times, and offer cost-effective solutions for consumers. This technology-driven approach further strengthens transparency and trust in lab-grown diamonds.
### Consumer Preferences Amid Festive Demand
While India’s jewelry market remains largely conservative—favoring traditional 22K gold—there is growing interest in lightweight gold jewelry and lab-grown diamonds. These options offer more affordable luxury without compromising on design or quality. The demand for diamonds during festive seasons remains robust, as customers increasingly view them as a valuable alternative in the face of rising gold prices.
